USS formed in 2004 when Buchholz and Parsons met while stocking a beer fridge at a golf course in the Greater Toronto Area. They bonded over music, and after Buchholz's sister hired Parsons to DJ her wedding, Buchholz moved into Parsons' parents' basement to experiment musically. The band's name came from a map Buchholz sketched of who he wanted to be, with "Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker" at the top; the duo emphasized the name is a characteristic, not a band title. Their first independent EP, Welding the C:/, was released in July 2008, and their single "Hollowpoint Sniper Hyperbole" gained airplay on Toronto radio station 102.1 The Edge.

Their debut full-length album, Questamation, came out in March 2009 on their label Smashing World Records, with production by Matthew Von Wagner and mastering by Bob Ludwig. The duo won the Favourite Group/Duo award at the CMW Indie Awards in 2009 and headlined the Toronto Plays For Haiti benefit in 2010. They released subsequent EPs Approved (2011) and Advanced Basics (2014), the latter funded via crowdsourcing. Their second studio album, New World Alphabet, arrived in 2017, and their final album, Einsteins of Consciousness, was released in January 2021.

In 2021, USS announced their Final Freakquency Tour, which concluded with a postponed final show in Toronto on June 11, 2022. They reunited in 2025 with a sold-out show at Toronto's Concert Hall and additional dates.
