Big Wreck are a Canadian rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1992 by guitarist Ian Thornley and guitarist Brian Doherty, later rounded out by bassist David Henning and drummer Forrest Williams. The band achieved commercial success in Canada and the United States with their debut album *In Loving Memory Of...* (1997) and its singles "The Oaf (My Luck Is Wasted)" and "That Song." After disbanding in 2003, the members pursued other projects, but Thornley and Doherty reunited in 2010, leading to a series of albums under the Big Wreck name, including *Albatross* (2012), *Ghosts* (2014), *Grace Street* (2017), *...But for the Sun* (2019), *7* (2023), and *The Rest of the Story* (2025). Big Wreck began as a student project at Berklee College of Music under the name Still Waters in 1992. The band adopted the name Big Wreck in 1994 after a rehearsal mishap. Ian Thornley became the lead singer after the band failed to find another vocalist. Their debut album *In Loving Memory Of...* (1997) produced the hit "The Oaf (My Luck Is Wasted)" and was supported by a 17-date tour. The follow-up *The Pleasure and the Greed* (2001) yielded three singles that did not chart in the U.S., and the band disbanded in early 2003. Thornley formed the band Thornley, while Doherty taught guitar and formed Death of 8.
In 2010, Doherty filled in as a guitarist at a Thornley show, leading to a joint tour and the revival of the Big Wreck name. The reunited band released *Albatross* in 2012, which produced their first #1 hit. Subsequent albums included *Ghosts* (2014), nominated for a Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year, and *Grace Street* (2017). In 2018, the band toured for the 20th anniversary of *In Loving Memory Of...*, performing the album in full. Co-founder Brian Doherty died of lung cancer on June 5, 2019, at age 51. The band continued as a trio, releasing *...But for the Sun* later that year.
In 2021, Big Wreck announced a multi-EP project leading to the album *7* (2023), with singles including "Bombs Away." The band released *The Rest of the Story* in 2025. Throughout their career, the band has seen several lineup changes, including drummers Christopher Henry, Brad Park, Chuck Keeping, and Sekou Lumumba.
