Barenaked Ladies formed after Ed Robertson and Steven Page became friends as teenagers and worked as counsellors at Interprovincial Music Camp. The band name was suggested by a friend after a Bob Dylan concert at Ontario Place Forum. The duo made its debut on October 1, 1988, at a Second Harvest benefit, filling their set with improvised songs and comic exchanges—a style that became a hallmark. The band expanded to include brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan and drummer Tyler Stewart, and later multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn replaced Andy Creeggan in 1995.

The band's independently released cassette The Yellow Tape (1991) became the first independent release certified platinum in Canada. Their debut studio album Gordon (1992) reached number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and was certified 8× platinum in Canada. After building an American audience through touring and the live album Rock Spectacle (1996), Barenaked Ladies achieved international success with Stunt (1998), whose lead single 'One Week' topped the US Billboard Hot 100. The band's music combines pop and rock with folk-derived acoustic arrangements, vocal harmonies, and lyrics alternating between humour and serious subjects.

Steven Page left the band in 2009 by mutual agreement, and the remaining members—Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Stewart, and Hearn—continued as a quartet. The band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018, with Page joining the performance for the first time since his departure. No further reunion followed.
